Detail in shoe cleaning video that has everyone talking

Janitor Brandon Pleshek has sparked a conversation about whether items should be cleaned before being donated to a second-hand store.
In a TikTok video showing the steps he took to clean his daughter’s first pair of Crocs, which she has grown out of, he revealed he was cleaning them for the purpose of donating them.
“Now the last time I did a video like this I got a ton of comments saying this is a waste of time, ‘why clean them before you donate them? Just drop them off’,” he said.

“And I get it – life is super busy and sometimes that’s just not an option and that’s OK. but for me, you guys know this, I truly enjoy the art of cleaning so it’s worth it to take five to 10 minutes to clean up the shoes the best I can so they last a little bit longer and have a new life for someone else to enjoy.”
Unlike Pleshek’s last video on cleaning an item he was donating, this one got a lot of love for being considerate to the thrift store and the future owner of the shoes.
“THANK YOU as someone who worked at a thrift store we love it when we get clean donations, dirty stuff takes too much time to clean and i have even been told “just throw it away if its too dirty,'” one said.
“As a kid who only had thrifted clothes as an option, thank you. It truly is going to light up a little one’s whole world. Shiny like new crocs!!” commented another.
“I love your attitude and way of explaining things. it’s so apparent how much kindness you put into your actions,” posted a TikToker.

Pleshek is right about cleaning items before donating them as typically second-hand stores request that they are in a clean and usable condition.
It’s often said that if you don’t feel comfortable giving that object to a friend, it’s not fit for donation, which is an easy rule of thumb to keep in mind when assessing whether something is donatable.
As for the Croc cleaning process Pleshek used, he removed the Jibbitz so his daughter can use them on her next pair and then sprayed the shoes with Dawn powerwash (a washing up detergent spray).
After leaving the detergent to sit for five minutes he scrubbed the shoes with a vegetable scrubber (that he doesn’t use on vegetables), dunked the shoes in soapy water for a final wash and then rinsed them under a tap.
